Problem to be solved

Until now, 3D modeling required costly, specialized devices and complex, time-consuming tasks performed by graphic designers or computer engineers. This meant only professionals such as topographers could afford to benefit from the use of 3D modeling.

3D modeling (as with photography 40 years ago) is still almost exclusively in the hands of professionals with hours of training and specific skills. It is mostly inaccessible to casual users who wish to do 3D modeling on their own using their own devices, like mobile phone cameras, without any previous knowledge and without having to wait forever to see the result.

The challenge was to make 3D modeling accessible to untrained, casual users in less than 5 minutes, using their smartphone camera.

Solution

We developed the eyesCloud3d platform, which allows users to generate 3D models using their smartphones. eyesCloud3D is a friendly, easy-to-use Cloud-based platform and app in which untrained users can create 3D models from a wide range of objects (small, like statuettes; medium, such as cars, or even large areas of land), by simply uploading photos or videos.

Moreover, we considerably reduced wait time by generating 3D models in under 5 minutes, without sacrificing image quality. It only takes three simple steps: shoot, upload and generate.
